You know, I saw this Patek Philippe watch, the Calatrava 6119G-001, they call it. Fancy name, huh? They say it is a remake, whatever that means. I just know it is a watch. A very, very expensive watch. They say it is a classic style. Well, I guess it looks alright, for a watch.
This here watch, it’s got a white gold case. 39mm, they told me. Big enough to see the time, I suppose. And that ain’t cheap, that white gold. They say it’s got a “Clous de Paris” bezel. I don’t know what that means, but it looks kinda bumpy, like the cobblestone road down by old man Johnson’s farm. They use some words like “guilloched hobnail pattern”. My, my, so many big words for a watch.
They also say this watch got some “three-dimensional hands.” I don’t know about three-dimensional, they just point at the numbers, like any other watch hands. But they do look kinda sharp, I’ll give ’em that. They call it “dauphine-style”, another fancy word. What is wrong with just calling them hands?
Inside, they say there’s a whole bunch of tiny little parts, all working together. They call it a movement, like it’s dancing or something. They say it is a new movement, all shiny and new. Make the watch work good, they say. You think they’d make watches that don’t work good? For that kinda money?
- This Patek Philippe, this Calatrava, it’s a tough one to get your hands on, they say.
- Some folks wait years, like 8 years or more for some other models, like this “Nautilus” thing, whatever that is!
- This one, maybe just a year. Maybe.
- If you got the money, that is.
They say this 6119G-001 is a newer one. They made it a little bigger than the old ones, so it’s easier to see, I guess. They say it’s got a charcoal gray dial. Sounds like something you’d find in the bottom of a barbecue pit. They say the hour markers, those are the little lines where the numbers should be, they’re made of white gold, too. And they’re “faceted,” whatever that means. Shiny, I guess. This watch sure is shiny.
Now, I heard some folks say this here watch ain’t for everyday wear. Too fancy, they say. Too expensive to risk getting it scratched up. Makes sense, I reckon. You wouldn’t wear your Sunday best to muck out the stalls, would ya? But some say this new 6119 is good for every day. I suppose if you got that kinda money, maybe you don’t worry about scratches.
They say it is an “investment”. Like buying land, but smaller, and you wear it on your wrist. I don’t know about that. Land, you can grow things on it. A watch just tells you the time. But some folks, they like these fancy things. They say it’s a “status symbol.” Like a big, shiny belt buckle, but for your wrist. Shows you got money, I suppose.
They say the case, that’s the round part that holds all the guts of the watch, they say it’s “geometric.” I don’t see any geometry, it’s just round. They say it’s inspired by “Bauhaus”. I don’t know any houses that look like that. Maybe they do over in the city. They say the watch is “supremely elegant”. Well, I suppose it is kind of pretty in a way, like a well-polished pair of boots. But for that kind of money, it better be more than just pretty.
This Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119G-001, it’s a real head-scratcher. It’s just a watch, ain’t it? But folks sure do make a fuss over it. This remake Patek Philippe, it is a big deal, I guess. They say only a few get to have one. Like winning the lottery, but you still gotta pay for the ticket.
I guess if you got the money, and you like fancy things, this Patek Philippe Calatrava might be for you. Me? I’ll stick with my old watch. It tells the time just fine. And I ain’t gotta worry about scratching it up when I’m feeding the chickens. But hey, to each their own, right? This classic style watch, it is something else, I will give it that. Just make sure your wallet is ready, that is for sure.
