Okay, so I’ve been obsessed with this Prada Arqué mini shoulder bag for a while now. It’s just so sleek and simple, but also kinda unique with that curved shape, you know? I finally decided to try my hand at making one myself, because, why not? Plus, the real deal is way out of my budget.

First things first, I started by looking at a ton of pictures of the bag online. I studied the shape, the stitching, the way the strap attaches, everything. I even found some knock-off versions being sold online to get a better look at the details. No shame in my game. I paid close attention to the triangular logo plaque on the front. Also I noticed some similar bags like the Cleo, Cahier. Prada is really into that minimalist, modern vibe.

Then, I sketched out a rough pattern. I’m no expert, but I figured I could get the basic shape down. It’s basically a half-moon with a flat bottom. It’s all about that curve, I realized! I made sure I had the dimensions right, or at least close enough.

Next up, the materials. I didn’t have any fancy leather lying around, so I went to a local fabric store. I found some pretty decent faux leather that had a nice smooth texture, similar to the real bag. And it was black, of course. I also picked up some lining fabric, a zipper, and some metal hardware for the strap.

The actual sewing was the hardest part. I dusted off my old sewing machine and got to work. I carefully cut out the pattern pieces and started stitching them together. I messed up a few times and had to rip out some seams, but I eventually got the hang of it. This step is super tiring. Sewing the curved edges was a real pain, I won’t lie. I had to go really slow and make sure everything lined up perfectly.

  • Cut out the pattern pieces from the faux leather and lining.
  • Sew the front and back pieces together along the curved edges, right sides facing.
  • Attach the zipper to the top opening.
  • Sew the lining pieces together.
  • Insert the lining into the bag and stitch it in place.
  • Add the strap and any hardware.

For the Prada logo, I improvised. I found a small piece of metal and shaped it into a triangle. Then I printed out the Prada logo and glued it onto the metal. Not perfect, but it does the trick! Attaching the strap was another challenge. I ended up using some D-rings and a lobster clasp that I salvaged from an old bag.

After many hours of work, and a few frustrated tears, I finally finished! It’s not an exact replica, obviously, but I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It definitely captures the essence of the Arqué bag. It’s got that same minimalist, chic vibe. I wore it out the other day and even got a few compliments! Someone even asked me where I got it, and when I told them I made it, they were shocked!

This whole experience taught me a lot about sewing and design. It’s definitely not easy to make a bag from scratch, but it’s so rewarding to see your vision come to life. I might even try making some other designer-inspired bags in the future. Maybe a Re-Nylon one next time, who knows?
