Okay, here’s my story about trying to make a copy of the Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire.
So, I’ve always been a huge fan of fancy watches, especially the Jaeger-LeCoultre ones. They’re like, super classy and expensive. I saw this one model, the Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire, and I was like, “Wow, that’s a beauty!” But, you know, it’s way out of my budget. These things can cost like thousands of dollars on the used market, let alone a brand new one. I think the average is somewhere around $8,000. So, I got this wild idea to try and make a knock-off version myself. Not to sell or anything, just to have something that looks similar, you know?
I started by looking up a bunch of pictures and videos of the watch online. I wanted to get a really good look at all the details, the way the hands move, the design of the face, everything. I even tried to find some technical drawings or blueprints, but those were hard to come by. It was tough to find some good information, but I found some things that said this model is usually bigger than others in the past. It is hard to understand why people pay so much for these things sometimes.
Then came the hard part – actually trying to build the thing. I’m no watchmaker, so I knew this was going to be a challenge. I started with the case. I found some cheap metal online and tried to shape it to look like the real deal. Let me tell you, it was a lot harder than it looked. Bending and cutting metal is tough work!
Next, I tackled the watch face. I used some cardboard for this, and I drew all the little numbers and markings on it. I tried to copy the design from the pictures I found. I even tried to make those little moon phase things. I used some blue and white paint to make it look like the night sky. It was actually kind of fun, even though it was super fiddly. But I think it was important to make sure I knew what I was getting when I started this. Also, it was important that it looked good for lots of different times, like when I am at work or with my family.
For the watch hands, I used some thin pieces of wire. I bent them into shape and painted them to match the real watch. Getting them to move was a whole other story. I tried using a cheap watch mechanism I bought online, but it didn’t quite work the way I wanted it to.
After a lot of trial and error, and a lot of frustration, I finally had something that looked sort of like the Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire. It definitely wasn’t perfect. The hands didn’t move smoothly, the case was a bit wonky, and the moon phase thing was pretty basic. It’s not the same quality as a real one, but I guess that’s why those are so expensive.

Besides, even if I had a real one I would be too afraid of breaking it. This one was cheap to make.

Also, I realized that sometimes it’s more about the journey than the destination. Even though my watch isn’t perfect, I had a lot of fun trying to make it. And I think maybe people think that about these kinds of expensive things. That they are important because they are expensive. Maybe, I don’t know.
But hey, who knows, maybe one day I’ll try again. Maybe next time I’ll try to copy a different model. Or maybe I’ll just save up and buy the real thing! A guy can dream, right?
