Okay, so I’ve been wanting a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712 for a while now. That blue dial, the power reserve indicator, it’s just a beautiful watch. But man, getting your hands on one is nearly impossible! I heard there’s like a 7-year waiting list at the official stores, and even then, you need some serious history with them to even be considered. Plus, there are rumors that they might stop making it soon, which makes me want it even more.
I started looking around online, just to see what was out there. I went on some website and saw there were 57 Patek Philippe 5712/1R-001 listings. It has lots of watches on there, but the prices were all over the place. I guess it depends on the seller and the condition of the watch. Rose gold Nautilus 5712 watches had a short run. The strap version was discontinued in 2024, leaving the ref. 5712/1R-001 as the only rose gold Nautilus Moon Phase model.
I got this crazy idea: What if I could just build my own online store dedicated to the 5712? I know, I know, it’s not the same as owning the real thing, but it would be a cool project, and maybe I could connect with other watch enthusiasts who are also obsessed with this model.
Starting the Project
First things first, I needed to find some pictures of the 5712. I’m talking high-quality, detailed pictures that show off every angle of the watch. I spent hours scouring the internet, saving every image I could find. I found a bunch of pics of the steel version with the blue dial, some of the rose gold ones, and even a few close-ups of the movement.
Then came the technical part. I’m not a professional web developer, but I know my way around some basic HTML and CSS. It was actually kind of fun, figuring out how to structure the website, create different pages for each variation of the 5712, and make it all look decent on both desktop and mobile.
Implementing the Details
Pictures: I made a gallery for each watch model, so you could really zoom in and appreciate the details. Like, I found this one picture that showed the light hitting the dial just right, and it looked amazing.
Descriptions: I wrote up some descriptions for each watch, talking about the specs, like the 40mm size of the steel model. I tried to make it sound like I was a real watch expert, even though I was just pulling info from different websites.
Virtual “Try-On”: This was the hardest part, but I managed to find a way to let people upload a picture of their wrist, and then overlay an image of the 5712 on it. It’s not perfect, but it gives you a rough idea of how the watch would look on you.
Sharing My Creation
After weeks of tinkering, I finally had something I was proud of. I shared the link with a few online watch forums, and the feedback was surprisingly positive! People were actually using the virtual try-on feature and discussing their favorite versions of the 5712. One guy even said he’d been on the waiting list for years and that my website was the closest he’d gotten to actually wearing the watch.
So yeah, it’s not the same as owning a real Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712. It’s a cool project. If you’re into watches, especially the 5712, you might get a kick out of it.
