I was looking for parts that were close enough in quality but wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg. I found some decent stainless steel cases and even a sapphire crystal glass that looked pretty spot on.
- First, I got a stainless steel case, pretty similar to the original.
- Then, I looked for a dial. I wanted that black, horizontally embossed look. Found one that was close enough.
- Hands were tricky, but I managed to find some that matched the style.
The movement was the biggest challenge. I wasn’t about to drop a fortune on a genuine Patek movement, so I had to find an alternative. I found a decent automatic movement that could handle the calendar and moon phase functions. It’s not the same, but it does the job.
Assembling the watch was where the real fun began. I’m not a professional watchmaker, but I’ve been practicing my skills a lot. Let me tell you, it was nerve-wracking. I was so worried about messing something up. Carefully putting the dial in place, attaching the hands, and fitting the movement into the case – each step was a test of patience.
The moment of truth was when I finally got it all together and saw it ticking. It wasn’t perfect, but it looked like a Nautilus 5726, and it worked! I even managed to get the calendar and moon phase working properly. I got a steel bracelet later, pretty nice looking.
In the end, I was pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s not a genuine Patek Philippe, but it’s a pretty good replica that I made myself. It’s got the look and feel of a Nautilus, and that’s good enough for me. Plus, I learned a ton about watches in the process, and my watchmaking skills are better than ever now.
