Okay, so I’ve been wanting to remake a Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, specifically the 5738R model, for a while now. You know, that classic style everyone loves. I finally got around to doing it, and let me tell you, it was a journey!
Getting Started
First, I had to really study the design. I mean, this watch is iconic. They say it’s based on the “golden section” from ancient Greek math, which is like 1 / 1.6181 or something. Apparently, that ratio is in a bunch of famous art and buildings. Anyway, I stared at pictures of the 5738R for hours, trying to get every curve and detail in my head.
The Shape
The shape is what makes this watch, right? It’s not a circle, not a square, it’s this unique ellipse. Getting that just right was crucial. I experimented with a few different methods until I got it.
The Details
- The Dial: I tried to copy the dial as close as possible. I made it rose gold like the original and then carefully created each of the hour markers.
- The Hands: Those thin, elegant hands were tricky. I practiced making tiny, precise shapes. It was tough, but I finally managed to make the hands look alright.
- The Crown: Even the little crown on the side has its own special shape. I paid attention to these details because they make a big difference.
Putting It All Together
Once I had all the pieces, it was time to assemble them. This was both exciting and nerve-wracking. I carefully put everything together, making sure it was all aligned perfectly, just like in my reference photos.
The Final Look
And there it was! My own version of the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738R. It felt amazing to see it finished. Of course, it’s not the real deal, but I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It’s got that same elegant vibe, and honestly, it looks pretty darn good on my wrist.
This whole project was a great learning experience. It pushed me to improve my skills and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into these amazing watches. Maybe one day I’ll get my hands on a real Patek Philippe, but for now, I’m happy with my little creation.
